Atlantis Rising, by T.A. Barron

Gave me Keeper of the Lost Cities vibes—mystical kingdom connected to a magical spiritual realm, threatened by an evil plot, which must be stopped by a pair of friends, each of them touching magic in their own way and finding out what—and who—they care about along the way. Great introduction to Fantasy. Fun characters and setting, and the plot clips along easily, guided by clean writing.

Promi (great name, right?) is really only guided by one thing—his belly. Specifically, the desire to fill his belly with sweets. By stealing them. In the process, he angers (at least) one of the high priests in the city and finds himself in all kinds of uncomfortable situations. One encounter brings him in contact with someone who shares her magic with him, setting him up to save the world. Then he rescues (kind of) a girl his age who knows, to some extent, how to do that. Together—though sometimes split up—they face off against the evil priest and his plans. Each time Promi uses magic, he must sacrifice something. As the sacrifices become more serious, so do the stakes. These losses help him to realize things about himself and his priorities, and lead him to discover worlds and people he never thought he would meet.

The premise of this book is the establishment of the island empire of Atlantis, and the story, world, and characters who contribute to this take the reader on a riveting adventure that will appeal to a wide audience—boys and girls, YA and adult, fantasy and history (great Atlantis allusions sprinkled throughout).
